All the troubleshooting assistance found here has been re-written and updated in my Macintosh Troubleshooting book: 'Fix a troubled Mac'

These Procedures are for any Macintosh that can boot into Mac OS 9.2.2 or earlier. If you need Mac OS X bootable only Support, go here

AppleshareIP ServerTroubleshooting

Note: This does not cover Mac OS X server software

Check the section: Appleshare, File Sharing or Network TCP/IP Issues first

Client Data backup warning: Do NOT perform any steps without being satisified that clients important data is backed up to at least two different forms of media. 1 x tape backup and 1 x duplicate to another drive is the minimum requirement.

Note: Be patient, ASIP file Servers can be slow when starting file services and can look as if they are actually hung.

  • Shutdown and Restart (unmount and disconnect any firewire drives, SCSI RAIDs and eject any DDS or AIT tapes)

If Services are running OK, reconnect additional drives if necessary. If problem persists follow these steps:

  • Shutdown File Services using the Mac OS Server admin(6.3>) or Appleshare Web & File Admin (<6.2) program

  • Shutdown and wait 30 seconds (this is voodoo)

  • Boot off Emergency Mac OS 9.2.2 CD and Run Disk Warrior to repair drives (make backups if required)

  • After repairs, Restart using Normal Startup drive (use control panel > startup disk) with extensions disabled

  • Rebuild desktop (hold down cmd-opt just before finder launches) -

this will take a few minutes for each drive. (Be patient, a Server with 250,000+ files will look like it is hung)

  • Restart again.

If Services are still not functioning properly, try these methods:

  • Use AppleshareIP First AID to repair the PDS and Users and Groups Files.

  • Use Sherlock to search for invisible files called Appleshare PDS, you need to drag into trash within sherlock from each of the Hard drives on the Server.

  • Consider a rebuild after documenting Users and Groups, Sharepoints and Configurations
